Certified peer support specialist, mental health advocate and speaker, Jasmin Pierre, created a mental health app for the black community.

Transcription:

This woman created a mental health app for the black community.

Jasmin Pierre is a certified peers support specialist, mental health advocate and speaker.

She created The Safe Place to give black people support and reduce the stigma around mental illness.

“Because believe it or not, it is a stigma in the black community.”

The app features videos, podcasts, articles, self-care tips, a mental health directory and a group forum.

“[Black people] are 20% more likely than the general population to experience serious mental health issues. Many are still not going to seek professional help.”

Mental health professionals could benefit from the app, too.

“I have black patients, and I feel that this could be a very great resource for them to give to their patients, or even for them to download to understand their black patients better.”

The Safe Place is available for free on Apple and Android devices.

“I want people to know that all races go through mental illness, nobody’s excluded from it. This is why I built this app. I just wanted people to realize the black community is not excluded from this, and I want them to realize that it’s OK to go and get help.”
