Post-Surgery, FKA twigs Shares What It's Like to Wonder If Your Body Will Ever Feel the Same
After you begin experiencing painful symptoms due to a chronic health condition, you might wonder if you’ll ever feel “normal” again. British singer and actress FKA twigs opened up about the fears and doubts she experienced during her “excruciating” battle with uterine fibroids.
The 30-year-old posted a video on Instagram Wednesday of herself pole dancing in a studio, with a caption explaining that she had laparoscopic surgery to remove six uterine fibroids. She compared each fibroid’s size to a piece of fruit: two cooking apples, three kiwis and a “couple of” strawberries. “A fruit bowl of pain every day,” she wrote. She said her nurse described her condition as being six months pregnant in terms of the size and weight of the fibroids.
“I tried to be brave but it was excruciating at times and to be honest I started to doubt if my body would ever feel the same again,” she wrote.
She had surgery in December and despite “lots of love” from friends and family, her confidence was knocked. She posted the video of herself dancing because she felt like her “strong self” for the first time in a while and it felt “magical.” She thanked her body for healing and reminding her to be kind to herself.
“I know that a lot of women suffer from fibroid tumours and I just wanted to say after my experience that you are amazing warriors and that you are not alone. You can get through this,” she wrote.
Uterine fibroids are benign growths that grow from muscle tissue of the uterus. Symptoms can include heavy or abnormal periods, bleeding between periods, pelvic pain, back pain, frequency or difficulty with urination, abdominal cramps and bowel issues. Some women’s symptoms are mild, while others’ are more severe.
In 2016, Sara Bareilles shared photos of her surgery to remove a uterine fibroid on Instagram and Bethenny Frankel documented her struggle with uterine fibroids on “The Real Housewives of New York City.”
