Parents of kids with down syndrome across the country are getting this tattoo

The three arrows represent the three copies of the 21st chromosome that people with Down syndrome have.

The idea started when a group of moms decided to get matching tattoos.

And after one of them posted pictures on Instagram, it became clear the design was striking a chord with people.

“So the meaning behind the tattoo for me is the symbolism of the unity of this tribe of parents. We all share something special in common that we were blessed to have a child with Down syndrome.”

“I’ve always kind of wanted to get something on my body that would bring awareness to it. And this is the perfect one.”

“And then the meaning behind the chevron itself I think is super important to our disability community.”

Another mom, Rosalinda Grey, started organizing events in California for people who want the tattoo.

And her husband, Tony, volunteered to be the tattoo artist for all of them.

“It means a lot more having a dad who has a child with Down syndrome who walks the same walk. He’s taken that same journey and so he can relate. It’s just made it that much more meaningful to know that he understands the symbolism behind it and the meaning behind it.”

“It was my first tattoo, so this is a big deal for me. So it was just a really special, special experience all the way around.”

The tattoos have gotten so popular that Tony is booked through August.

“It seems to be blowing up. There’s, like, groups all over the country doing this. We’re just getting a really good response from it. So I think it’s awesome.”

And it’s not just for parents

The tattoo is resonating with siblings, grandparents and close friends in the Down syndrome community.

“And it’s brought so much awareness all around us here. It’s been really awesome to be asked about the tattoos and then to have such a great response.”

The movement has even gone global, with groups in the U.K. and Mexico planning on getting what is now known as #TheLuckyFewTattoo.
