When you have a chronic illness or disability, there are aspects of working that can be especially difficult if you work in an office. You may want to avoid looking like you’re taking too many breaks or feel you don’t “look sick enough” to do so. Even if you’re open with some of your co-workers or your boss about living with a condition, you may still worry about how others will treat you.

Mighty contributor Sam Wilson shared how this impacts their work day in the article, “5 Reasons Office Life Is Hard When You Have a Chronic Illness“:

I feel a lot of guilt that I am ‘not sick enough’ to excuse not doing my best. Since I can get up (reluctantly) every morning and show up for work, I feel like I shouldn’t be complaining. Not to you, and not to anyone. But I know I’m still a dedicated employee, and I’m really good at my job — even though I can’t dedicate all the time in the world to my job because I need to do some healing.

If you’re having a hard time with work-life balance and want to try something else, consider a work-from-home option. You can ask your current employer for an accommodation if you’re comfortable or start looking for a new gig that’s already completely remote. Regardless of your employment journey, know you’re not alone in making difficult decisions to balance your health and work lives.

Here are seven companies with open remote jobs you can apply for this October:

1. Ergeon

It might be hard to believe you can work remotely for a construction company, but Ergeon makes this happen by connecting local contractors to customers. To accomplish this work, Ergeon employs workers who help manage day-to-day operations, including customer support and sales. All of Ergeon’s jobs can be done remotely from anywhere around the world, though no benefits are listed on its site.

You’re probably a whiz at interpreting the medical jargon that comes up at your doctor’s appointments, so a medical transcription gig with Scribekick may be a good option for you. Scribekick’s transcriptionists (entry level welcome) work remotely in the U.S., but check each job listing carefully because they’re listed by state. No mention of benefits online, and the company pays hourly.
