On Wednesday, “American Idol” featured 20-year-old singer and reality singing competition hopeful Logan Johnson. While he stood out for his vocals, it was his message that made an even bigger impact. Johnson covered Demi Lovato’s “Sober” in celebration of his own eight months of sobriety.
In a video featuring the Boise, Idaho native and his family ahead of his audition, Johnson reveals his older brother also faced addiction. While his family is supportive, it was still a process for him to realize he needed support to recover.
“I just got to a point where I had to change,” Johnson said. “It was really, really hard to finally come clean and say, ‘I’ve got my own issues too and I need help.’”
Johnson took the stage in front of “Idol” judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie. “I’m grateful today that I have eight months of sobriety. But I just know I have a lot to share with my music,” Johnson said before he began an acoustic version of Lovato’s heart-wrenching track, accompanying himself on guitar.
The song went over well with the judges, who praised Johnson’s talent. Bryan compared him to Justin Timberlake. Before the trio of judges took a vote, they invited Johnson’s family into the room to hear the judges give him a unanimous “yes” to move on to the next round of the competition.
“You now have three more people on your support team,” Richie said after casting his vote. “We are there for you.”
