To the 'Friends' My Chiari Malformation Left Behind
Chiari malformation, my new best friend. I had no idea you existed so I knew nothing about you. I guess you thought my body was lonely because before you came along, I had no headaches, dizziness, numbness and tingling, nerve pain, loss of balance, brain fog, loss of concentration, confusion with thoughts and words, body weakness, insomnia, trouble driving, playing tug of war with my insides or gravity, to name few.
Now that you have come into my life, you have graciously filled my body with all these new friends. I don’t know if you’re aware, but you’ve overstayed your welcome and I’d like you to leave. Especially since I did you a favor and had decompression surgery to give you room to breathe.
And maybe you’re gone, but some friends remain. Who knows, you’re such a mystery. Please give me my life back and my mental health too. I’m tired of hurting and making excuses for you.
Sincerely,
Erica
