There are so many exceptionally talented and compassionate doctors out there who truly do everything they can for their patients. They listen, take their time, are respectful, and treat patients not just as patients, but as complex human beings with full lives outside of the doctor’s office.

Unfortunately, not every doctor appointment runs perfectly. Doctors are people, too, and some might not have the best bedside manner, or have the occasional “off” day. Other times, doctors may brush off a patient’s concerns as “no big deal” due to the old medical school adage that tells doctors, “if you hear hoofbeats, look for horses, not zebras.”

For many chronic illness patients, it is not uncommon to leave an appointment feeling a bit frustrated. Perhaps the doctor didn’t take your concerns seriously or you weren’t able to get the diagnosis or treatment you were seeking. The emotions that follow a “bad” doctor appointment – especially if you had waited weeks or months for it – can be heavy, and undoubtedly carry a lot of implications for your health and your everyday life.

But if you’re struggling after an appointment that let you down, try taking a few moments to let out some steam and laugh. Humor is a powerful coping mechanism for many in our community, and if it’s something that helps you, check out the following memes we rounded up about the struggles of going to the doctor.
