The Words I Want Mothers of Chronically Ill Children to Hear

In view of this year’s Mother’s Day I decided that is it finally time to thank all mothers out there. Not just for being a “regular” mom but for being the mom of a chronically ill child. Because honestly, this requires probably as much strength, stamina and hope as it takes to fight the illness itself. So have a seat and take the time to read the following letter that I have written as a chronically ill child.

Dear Mom,

Thank you for never doubting the actual existence of my disease.

Thank you for taking my pain seriously.

Thank you for the attempt to take away this pain. Even if you weren’t always successful, I want you to know that your willingness means more to me than you can imagine.

Thank you for your courage that gives me the strength to keep on fighting.

Thank you for always being there for me. Even at night when you’re needing your sleep more than ever.

Thank you for accompanying me to important doctor appointments.

Thank you for never giving up on me despite your constant worries.

Thank you for always being patient with me and never losing hope.

Thank you for never making me feel lonely.

Thank you for accepting me and my disease.

Thank you for being my mom.

I love you.

Love,

Your chronically ill child
