Damning Obituary Blames Trump and Those Not Wearing Masks for Man's COVID-19 Death

An obituary making its way around Twitter didn’t hold back on who was to blame for one Texas man’s COVID-19 death — including President Donald Trump, Texas Governor Greg Abbott and the “selfish” people who believed their right not to wear a mask was more important than the lives of others.

David Nagy, a husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, died from COVID-19 on July 22 at age 79. He was treated at the ICU at Christus Good Shepherd Hospital in Longview where he was separated from his family because of the contagious nature of the novel coronavirus. Following his death, his wife, Stacey Nagy, wrote his obituary, which was published in the Texas newspaper Jefferson Jimplecute.

Stacy did not mince words on who was responsible for her husband’s death. From President Trump down to individuals flaunting public health guidelines about face masks, Stacy said those who did not take COVID-19 seriously have cost lives, including David’s. She wrote:

David’s death was needless. The blame for his death and the deaths of all the other innocent people, falls on Trump, Abbott and all the other politicians who did not take this pandemic seriously and were more concerned with their popularity and votes than lives. Also to blame are the many ignorant, self centered and selfish people who refused to follow the advice of the medical professionals, believing their “right” not to wear a mask was more important than killing innocent people.

As of Tuesday, Texas reported more than 150,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases, over 8,500 hospitalizations and over 7,000 deaths. COVID-19 arrived in the United States as early as January. COVID-19 cases began spiking again across the country in the last two months as states reopened, leading to an uptick in deaths.

Wearing masks, practicing social distancing and hand-washing are the most effective methods of COVID-19 protection we have. But many people haven’t been following the public health guidance, which puts everyone at risk.

Stacy concluded the obituary, which she also shared on Facebook, saying “Dave did everything he was supposed to do, but you did not. Shame on all of you.”
