Common Problems Freelancers face when starting #Freelancer

Have you ever wanted something so bad and you’re too excited to start? But then, reality kicks in and suddenly your excitement turns into anxiety.

As a freelancer (virtual assistant), you want to make this career work out so that you could quit your day job and spend more time with your loved ones and even with yourself. Now that you’ve decided to jump into this new world called freelancing, online job, work from home, digital nomad-ing, or whatever you may want to call it, my question for you now is how do you face your fears? How do you see yourself in this industry? Are you having cold feet of starting out?

I’ve written here 5 common problems of freelancers and how to solve them. Please take note that these are based on my experience when I started working online-based. The solutions that you’re about to read here are some of what helped me hopefully it can also give you an idea on how to solve these problems. Who knows, you might also be experiencing these, right?

Here it goes!

TIME MANAGEMENT

Distractions and Obligations. Yes, we all have a lot of things to do in our lives. We have families, kids and other obligations to do especially for the parents.

I know that incorporating a new part of your routine might take some time to get used to. I’ve experienced this when I started working as a freelancer, I used to have a day job and then I after getting home from that, I have to prepare for my online job since my clients usually are from the other side of the world, so we have different time zones. And soon, I know I will be having a big adjustment because I will give birth and I don’t know how I can do the chores while taking care of a newborn, check my students’ assignments (I am now a freelancing coach, read my story here) and take care of my husband too.

What I do now is as much as possible, mindset my husband that I need his support since we only have each other here abroad, as much as possible I want to go back working asap so that I can help him with our finances. I tell him that we should have a shifting schedule in taking care of the baby, and hopefully, we’d be able to adjust slowly and smoothly until I am fully recovered.
Another way to have proper time management is to create a to-do list for the day. This can be your guide to stay track of what you still need to accomplish.

If you have kids, you can also teach them how to help you with the chores. Somehow this is a good way of instilling them good habits and discipline that not all things should be done by the parents.

CHOOSING YOUR STARTING NICHE

Most people are very eager to start working online. They have the impression that starting out is very easy. But the truth is, this is the deal-breaker because you have to create a lot of profiles, your resume, and more importantly, identify what will be your starting niche.

How I Became a Freelancing Coach | Coach Lau #Freelancer

Everything happens for a reason and it comes at the right time.
Do you believe this? I didn’t fully embrace this phrase until I became a freelancing coach.
I used to work for a client online. Creating digital layouts, social media management, data entry, and some general virtual assistant duties for her business. I loved working as a virtual assistant. I get to work anywhere I want without the stress of going to work or think of what should I wear for the next day and so on.
Until I suffered from depression.
I am a happy person, I enjoy simple things in life. Just give me a Chatime Milk Tea with Coconut Jelly and I’m happy 🙂 I am a positive person and I always look at the bright side of life. I didn’t know I would experience depression even with my personality.
I was fortunate to know this earlier before it got worst. I was having a hard time sleeping, my mind just doesn’t stop from thinking, anxiety, stress eating, my relationship with my husband starts to suffer.. And so is my work.
I am lucky to have a client who is so understanding when I told her that I cannot do the work at the moment because of my state. I cannot focus. She understood and gave me time to prioritize my recovery. However, this is not like a fever that taking medicines would help me get better. Depression takes time and has no definite time of healing. I told her that I will just resign so that she can find someone who can serve her better, she accepted it.
Now, I thought to resign was a good thing. But it wasn’t. I do not want to depend on my husband’s salary, I want to have my own money. So I tried looking for jobs again online but there is no positive response, I even tried submitting applications to agencies in Singapore (that’s where my husband is based at the moment), still, I got rejected.
I was doubting myself already. What happened to me? Was I not good enough? I was really desperate to go back working that I even accepted the fact that I will go back to working in an office. I was also thinking of starting a business, but how would I do that with the little money I have left? That was just enough to get me through my daily expenses.
