30 Seconds to Mars’ 'Rescue Me' Music Video Has a Message for Anyone With Emotional Pain
Thirty Seconds to Mars released a new music video Tuesday for the song “Rescue Me,” and it’s for anyone experiencing emotional pain, anxiety or depression.
In the YouTube description for the music video, lead singer Jared Leto explains that the song is about pain, empowerment, faith and freedom. It’s also about “the brutal war so many of us wage against fear, depression and anxiety in the hope that we might, one day, live a life filled with happiness and dreams.”
“Pain does not discriminate,” Leto writes. “It can affect us all. In our bodies. Our hearts. Our minds. And often, when that pain is emotional or mental, we are afraid to speak up.”
Leto urges listeners to check up on their friends who might not be OK and be there however they can, and that those struggling can get through this and seek help. Within the description are links to resources and information for anyone who may need help.
The music video is simple but emotionally raw. Multiple people, including Leto, are featured against a black backdrop. Throughout the video, each person displays vulnerability through emotion, from sadness and anger to happiness. The video includes people of multiple races, ages and abilities. One woman has Down syndrome, one man uses a wheelchair and another has a limb difference. The music video shows that emotional pain is universal, no matter who you are. Toward the end of the video Leto shares a hug with his brother and bandmate, Shannon Leto.
“Both my brother and I have had our own intense personal battles and it has, and continues to be, life changing,” Leto writes. “I try to remember that just past the darkest days await the brightest and most rewarding moments. And that change is always right around the corner.”
Fans reacted to the music video on Twitter. Some told the band how much the song meant to them as they dealt with their own emotional pain.
#RescueMe a beautiful song about pain✊, about the war against so many mental issues????, about faith in others and yourself????, and about freedom after fighting????️

Trusting is sometimes so hard, but when you trust, when you talk about what you feel, when you tell your fears and your pains, the rescue can happen. Do not give up, scream, cry, ask for help, trust, say #RescueMe for someone you trust.@30SECONDSTOMARS
