Lea Michele Gets Real About Fighting PCOS-Related Acne
Actress and singer Lea Michele is opening up for the first time about her polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) diagnosis and the effect it has had on her skin.
The “Glee” and “Scream Queens” star posted on her Instagram stories Wednesday in response to a follower’s question, “What is the #1 trick to healthy skin?” Michele responded that she’s had acne her whole life and took medication for it growing up.
“I eventually learned I had a condition called PCOS which is a common diagnosis for women,” Michele wrote.
She said that she was able to “correct” her diet and got her skin “under control.” She also said she worked with a skincare expert and the skincare brand Is Clinical.
“Strongly believe in taking care of yourself on the inside,” she wrote. “Drinking tons of water, good sleep, washing your face before bed, no smoking etc., is always a good place to start.”
PCOS is considered a hormonal problem and can cause symptoms including infertility, unwanted hair growth, weight gain, irregular periods, acne, mood changes, pelvic pain, cysts on ovaries, and fatigue (though not all people with PCOS experience all symptoms). It’s usually treated with drugs including hormonal birth control, anti-androgen medicines and prescription drugs like metformin. Anti-inflammatory foods high in fiber and lean protein are recommended as well. However, there is no cure.
Other celebrities who have shared their PCOS diagnosis include Daisy Ridley, “Teen Mom OG” star Maci Bookout, and “Pretty Little Liars” actress Sasha Pieterse.
