Social anxiety disorder, also known as social phobia, is a mental health condition characterized by a significant fear and anxiety of performance or social settings and interactions. Symptoms include self-consciousness, embarrassment, and fear of being scrutinized or judged. The severity of these symptoms extend beyond shyness and an individual can only be diagnosed with social anxiety disorder if it significant affects his or her daily life. Treatments such as therapy and counseling, anxiety medication, and learning coping skills can help improve symptoms. Information provided in part by our partner ADAA.
