In Between the Lines: Car Radio by Twenty One Pilots

As human beings, one of out primary activities in life is to go through a journey. We journey through tough times, happy moments, inspiring moments, etc. But what if the faculty that enables you to journey makes journeying itself a burden. On the highway, many cars journey. Some are brand new, others relatively new, and others damaged, barely making the journey. But what do they have in common? They are all headed to a destination.

Car Radio challenges the premise that life is a journey that ought to be experienced with a companion. The passing of moments that comprise the journey of life is an element that is inevitable. In your journey, you ought to have a companion, but your "co-pilot" may fall sleep and your passengers can be so comfortable that they forget that they need to accompany you. What choice do you have aside from your "Car Radio"

When you're all alone, going through an experience that should be shared and guided, thoughts fill your mind. These, compounded with the lack of company, spell a myriad of thoughts that are not very gentle. There is no stopping the journey of life. At all costs, you must go on.

The silence isn't very quiet as the journey through life throws curveballs of fear, anxiety, depression, and thoughts of ending the very journey itself. The song shares with us the experience of solitude in the journey of life. It is not easy. It is terrifying. And most of all, it is mentally incapacitating. "I ponder of something great, my lungs will fill and then deflate". Immense is the magnitude of things that deeply trouble the human psyche. "I'm forced to deal with what I feel, there is no distraction to mask what is real". Our thoughts are valid, our thoughts are true. Our thoughts maybe irrational but they are concrete in its own abstract form. They are so real that they fill our being so overwhelmingly that there is no disguise that can cover the aggressive thoughts that occupy a solitary mind. Only in challenging them do we find resolution; the rationality of the irrationality.

Finally, I think that the song verbalizes the challenges, sorrow, confusion, and frustration of traversing through life with personal circumstances that are too great to manage; "a damaged car".

"But from the things that work there are only two and from the two that we choose to do, peace will win and fear will lose"

At all costs, at the end of the journey we will arrive at our destination and bask in the peace and tranquility. Despite that 'broken car', we will attain that peace. And when we do, all those tribulations would have forged us to be stronger and mighty.

The journey is treacherous, but the destination is paradise.
