7 Songs That Have Helped Me Cope With Being Undiagnosed

When I’m lying in bed, home sick again, unable to do anything because of the pain, music is one of the first things I turn to. When I feel like nobody understands my pain, music reminds me that others have been there and gotten through it. Here are some of my favorite songs to listen to on those days:

1. “Superman (It’s Not Easy)” by Five for Fighting

One of the hardest things for me about invisible illness/undiagnosed conditions is that I feel like I’m constantly fighting an impossible battle nobody knows anything about. If you’ve read my story “The Question That Made Me Rethink My Undiagnosed Illness Battle”, I’ve been trying to accept the fact that it’s not easy. The chorus of this song sums this up well, even for Superman it’s not easy. But that just makes us Superman.

2. “Let Her Cry” by Hootie and the Blowfish

Sometimes I’m just in so much pain I need to cry. Sometimes it doesn’t seem like there’s a reason – it’s just too much. That’s why I love the lyrics “I say that I don’t care I just run my fingers through her dark hair… Let her cry… if it eases all her pain.”

3. “The Middle” by Bebo Norman

Sometimes it’s all too much. I feel trapped in this pain and I can’t see an end. I would give almost anything for the pain to stop. It doesn’t mean I don’t love my life, I just don’t love it right now. This song makes me cry every time, because I finally feel understood. But it also reminds me that when I’m in the middle I’m not alone. And it will end.

4. “His Daughter” by Mary Kate Kestner

This song is a beautiful narrative of a strong woman. At the beginning she questions her faith as she’s challenged by pain and suffering, but ultimately she realizes her faith and what she’s been given because of her pain. A beautiful reminder of true strength and perseverance.

5. “I Need A Miracle” by Third Day

Sometimes I feel like I’m just waiting for something better to happen. For my life to change. This song is a reminder that life will get better.

6. “Moments” by Emerson Drive

Sometimes it is too easy to feel defined by our illness or by our current condition. This song is a reminder that there is more to us than our current selves. And even more powerfully, it reminds me that we can still help others no matter where we are.

7. “From Now On” by Ramin Karimloo

I loved the movie “The Greatest Showman” and have found many of the songs encouraging in my battles with illness. This cover empowers me to keep moving forward. Every day is a new day and every day can be a better day. The energetic beat of this song makes me smile and helps me keep pushing forward.
