If you live with a chronic illness, disability or even a mental health condition, it can be much harder to find work opportunities, especially ones that fit your needs like a flexible schedule for doctor’s appointments. You may also have faced doubt about whether you’re able to work at all, including from job recruiters themselves. This simply isn’t true, especially when employers make simple accommodations.

Mighty contributor Meridith O’Connor aptly sums up the issue in her article, “Finding Accommodating Employment When Chronically Ill.” She wrote:

“People with disabilities cannot work” is a blanket statement and a scapegoat for discrimination and stereotyping. Many of us can work, and want to work. As a society, we must see beyond the limitations disabilities present, and cultivate spaces that allow us to embrace our skills and strengths, allowing us to be who we are, and not our disabilities.

If working from home is the very accommodation you need to succeed, you can try asking your current employer or the hiring manager of a job you’re interested in if they will allow you to work remotely. This right to request reasonable accommodations is protected under the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA). You can also, of course, look specifically for job openings and companies that hire remote workers.

To get you started, here are seven companies with work-from-home jobs with positions open now. Don’t forget to share with us how your search is going in the comments!

1. Xapo

Digital currency like Bitcoin is all the rage, and China-based Xapo aims to help clients keep their digital currency locked up safe. The cryptocurrency wallet service operates similar to a bank, and it needs a global team to support this work. While benefits aren’t listed on Xapo’s website, it does list competitive pay and flexible scheduling as two perks of employment.

2. ServiceScape

ServiceScape connects freelancers with editing, translation, graphic design and writing gigs you can do at home. Apply to be a “professional” on the site. If approved, you’ll create a profile to attract clients and go through a tutorial project to get familiar with the platform. Then you’re in the pool to accept paying assignments. However, note that ServiceScape takes a 50 percent commission and encourages editors to offer free sample editing projects to prospective clients.

3. Transcription Outsourcing

If you have fast typing skills and a good handle on transcription, you may be interested in a gig with Transcription Outsourcing. The company provides transcribing services for clients in the medical, legal, law enforcement, academic, financial and general business sectors. There aren’t many details about working for Transcription Outsourcing on its site, but it says both employment and independent contractor positions are available.

The company’s current open position is available for work-at-home phone operators who will field calls to reduce sales fraud. BSG needs English-, Spanish- or bilingual-speaking operators. While you likely won’t be offered benefits, you can set a flexible schedule and will earn $8.50 an hour.

Transcom needs employees to staff its call centers around the globe, in many languages. You’ll be hired as a regular employee with benefits, which include medical, dental and vision coverage, paid time off and 401K retirement plan options.

The Details:

6. Enterprise Holdings

If you’ve ever rented a car, one of your options might have been Enterprise, Alamo or National, which are all under the Enterprise Holdings umbrella. The nationwide car rental company needs remote employees to book reservations and provide customer service. For its remote positions, you’ll need to live near the city and state listed on the job posting, but they have openings across the country. Most jobs are full-time and starting pay is $13 an hour.

Lodge’s mission, and it’s willing to make accommodations for its diverse staff.
