A while ago, after one of my first asthma attacks, I took to the Mighty to find out how to get better faster, and I wanted to add my own little tips to that now. There will always be someone else who needs a guiding hand.

This should go without saying, but stop doing whatever caused the attack. For me, it could be cleaning, gardening, or sitting with the windows open.

Take your rescue inhaler, as much as your doctor told you. I've found it better to have one puff, then breathe for a few moments before the second puff. I have an arrangement with my doctor that I keep emergency prednisone tabs with me at all times, just for when my chest is REALLY tight. My advice? Take the tabs with yogurt. I find I don't feel ill after taking the tabs with dairy, but I don't know if it's just me.

Change your clothes, if possible. Dust and dander are triggers for me, so I have a shower (I literally sit on the floor and let the water wash over me. I never have the energy to stand, so don't push it) and change to soft, loose clothes. Like PJs.

Have some hot tea. I like it sweet after an attack, I feel like I deserve the extra sugar, and it soothes my throat.

Go. To. Bed. Keep lots of water with you, have a loved one bring you tea and snacks. My lungs always burn for 2 to 4 days after an attack, mostly from my throat to my breast bone. There is nothing to help that except pain killers, and even that is touch and go sometimes. Keep lozenges close by, I find they stop some coughs, which we all know feel like torture after an attack. Your whole body will hurt. You will be ok. Just rest, keep up with your asthma meds.

Let people look after you. This one is always hard for me because I'm the 'carer' in my household. I'm the one that fixes boo-boos.

As always, if YOU feel like you need help, go to a doctor. No one knows your body the way you do, and don't let anyone brush off how you're feeling.
