Broadway Star Nick Cordero Dies From COVID-19 at 41

Broadway star and actor Nick Cordero has died from COVID-19 at the age of 41, according to an Instagram post from his wife, on Sunday. Cordero earned a Tony nomination for his role in the Broadway show “Bullets Over Broadway” and also starred in “Waitress” and “Rock of Ages.” He also appeared in the TV series “Blue Bloods.”

“God has another angel in heaven now,” Cordero’s wife Amanda Kloots wrote on Instagram. “My darling husband passed away this morning. He was surrounded in love by his family, singing and praying as he gently left this earth.”

He was surrounded in love by his family, singing and praying as he gently left this earth. ⠀ I am in disbelief and hurting everywhere. My heart is broken as I cannot imagine our lives without him. Nick was such a bright light. He was everyone’s friend, loved to listen, help and especially talk. He was an incredible actor and musician. He loved his family and loved being a father and husband. Elvis and I will miss him in everything we do, everyday. ⠀ To Nicks extraordinary doctor, Dr. David Ng, you were my positive doctor! There are not many doctors like you. Kind, smart, compassionate, assertive and always eager to listen to my crazy ideas or call yet another doctor for me for a second opinion. You’re a diamond in the rough. ⠀ ⠀ I cannot begin to thank everyone enough for the outpour of love , support and help we’ve received these last 95 days. You have no idea how much you lifted my spirits at 3pm everyday as the world sang Nicks song, Live Your Life. We sang it to him today, holding his hands. As I sang the last line to him, “they’ll give you hell but don’t you light them kill your light not without a fight. Live your life,” I smiled because he definitely put up a fight. I will love you forever and always my sweet man. ❤️

Cordero was hospitalized in late March with pneumonia, which doctors soon learned was caused by COVID-19. Due to complications, Cordero had his leg amputated and needed a tracheostomy. During the 95 days the actor was in the hospital, he spent several weeks in a medically induced coma. Kloots kept fans up to date on Cordero’s journey through her Instagram account. Last week, she shared that Cordero would likely need a double lung transplant.

COVID-19, the disease caused by SARS-CoV-2, is primarily considered a respiratory illness. Common symptoms include shortness of breath, coughing and a fever, but patients also report digestive issues, blood clots, heart issues, strokes and more that go beyond the lungs. The wide range of symptoms led researchers to consider COVID-19 as a blood vessel disorder.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there have been more than 2.8 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the U.S. and nearly 130,000 deaths. After many states reopened in the last month, cases across the country have surged. Public health officials are urging the public to wear face masks, practice physical distancing and wash your hands often.
