#Gastroschisis
Gastroschisis is a birth defect of the abdominal wall that results in an infant’s intestines, and sometimes other organs, to form outside the infant’s body through a hole usually to the right of the belly button. It occurs during the early stages of pregnancy when the infant’s abdominal wall muscles do not properly form. Exposure to amniotic fluid causes the intestines to swell, twist and/or shorted, and can cause long-term damage. Following the birth, surgical repair is necessary to return the organs into the abdominal cavity.
