18 Texts to Send a Friend Who's Isolating Themselves
I say I’m a “bad texter” — but the truth is a little more complicated than that.
Most of the time, I’m scared of my phone, and sometimes go for days without texting anyone back. (Don’t get me started on Facebook messages…) During particularly tough weeks, not talking to anyone morphs into not hanging out with anyone. When I begin to isolate myself like this, it’s a red flag that something more might be going on — whether I’m beginning to sink a little into depression, or my anxiety is getting so bad, even the thought of hanging out with people makes me panic.
When people isolate like this, it doesn’t mean they hate their friends, or that they don’t actually want to hang out with them, Usually, it’s an indicator that something is wrong — and during these times of isolation, we sometimes need support the most.
But supporting a friend who won’t hang out with you or won’t text you back is tricky. Mighty community member Molly P. shared this insight:
I just wish someone noticed the pain I’m in, and not feel like I’m going through it alone all the time. The actions speak so much louder and being ignored cause it’s “easier” than addressing that I’m sinking.
A simple text can go a long way in supporting a friend who is isolating. That’s why we consulted with the lovely members of our mental health community, and asked them to share one text they’d love to receive when they’re isolating.
It’s important to remember our loved ones can’t read our minds. While one person who’s isolating might love when a friend insists on stopping by, another person might just need to receive funny meme. If you’re someone who tends to isolate, I’d encourage you to talk to your friends and family about what you need during these times. We hope this list of text messages helps you start a conversation with a loved one — and we hope it also reminds you that even when we’re isolating, we don’t have to be truly alone.
