New Year’s resolutions often leave a lot to be desired. For starters, they often require you to be someone you’re not, almost overnight. If you’re not already cleaning your house, exercising every day and picking books over Netflix (or whatever your resolutions are), how are you going to execute such major changes the second the clock strikes midnight?

There’s a reason people overwhelmingly fail at their resolutions, and that is because they’re often unrealistic. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try to prioritize your wellbeing or accomplish a goal in 2020. You absolutely should! But first, you need to understand this: You’re doing the best you can.

That’s right, you, the person reading this, are doing the best you can to live within your parameters — whether that be time, energy, resources or something else. And in case you haven’t heard it recently, you’re doing a great job.

But you want to improve, right? You want to find more time to take care of yourself and prioritize your needs. That’s the reason you have resolutions in the first place or clicked on this article. It’s OK to want to do better. That’s why we created 52 Small Things — to help you prioritize YOU.

Each week, we’ll give you a new self-care task. Some might be more luxurious — like pampering yourself — while others will be what’s referred to as “boring self-care,” tasks that don’t feel as fun as a bubble bath but prioritize your wellbeing by helping you check things off your to-do list. These might include tasks like staying hydrated, doing your laundry or even practicing dental hygiene — because, let’s face it, sometimes we all just need a hand adulting.

Every Sunday, we’ll send you the week ahead’s task as well as an explanation as to why we picked it, resources to help you on your journey and ways to “level-up” your self-care.
