How come I keep turning on my DMs but it doesn’t actually reflect on my account?

I have disabled direct messages due to the inappropriate use and solicitation of my personal information. I apologize to anyone who was previously speaking with me on legitimate terms but I can’t handle nor want to deal with the nonsense.
