Unexpected Gifts

Leaning in
I learned
Quite by accident

Or to
put another way
As a byproduct of
survival

A gift
from adverse
circumstances

Perhaps even
A gift from the
Universe, itself

Cancer treatments
carry
many many
side effects

My hearing loss
became
a small price
to pay
to stay

alive

I never dreamed
That in return

My leaning
in
On my right side
Became
A tangible outwardly
sign

of my deep deep love
for my
beloved.

For which

This one is for the mommy or the daddy of a little warrior. 'Tis the season to be jolly, but maybe you can't even fake a smile today. I've never been a parent so I won't pretend to know your pain, but I've been the sick kid and I've seen my strong Daddy cry. It's ok to be weary. It's ok to put down your sword and tend to your own wounds. It's ok if you don't have it together today. Almost 30 years later, all I remember thinking on the day my Daddy cried for me is, "Wow, he REALLY loves me..." Know that someone is thinking of you and praying.
