Did you know that there are different kinds of flashbacks?
Emotional flashbacks are often experienced by those who have experienced prolonged trauma or developmental trauma rather than a single incident trauma. Instead of having a visual accompanied with the flashback that occurs in a narrative form, emotional flashbacks (sometimes called “amygdala hijackings”) involve intense re-experiencing of feelings that occurred during a traumatic experience like helplessness, fear, confusion or abandonment.
When I get emotional flashbacks they often feel like I am over responding to a current situation. I get somewhat paranoid and begin catastrophizing. That’s a clue that something has made me feel dysregulated and catapulted me into emotions from a past trauma.
If you experience emotional flashbacks, what do they feel like for you?
