Port-Wine Stain Birthmark

A port-wine stain birthmark, also known as nevus flammeus, is a congenital vascular malformation that causes a light pink to dark-red discoloration of the skin that resembles a red wine stain. The birthmark can be anywhere on the body, but is commonly on the face, neck, scalp, legs or arms, and can be any size. It usually changes in proportional size and texture throughout the lifespan. Laser therapy and cryogen spray cooling are available treatments for individuals who want to improve its appearance or prevent the development of vascular nodules and hypertrophy that commonly appears with age.
