*spoilers ahead*
Incase you haven’t seen it, the show is about a figure skater who has bipolar disorder and her experiences in the highly competitive sport. It throws in some suspense, an emotionally and verbally abusive mother, some romance, drama and of course, lots of beautiful skating.
I have been binge watching the series and am finding that it has a very authentic portrayal of mental illness and is not shy to show the horrible and truthful sides of coping with one. I am also finding parts of it very hard to watch- *spoiler* such as the scenes of Kat biting herself. I think it also displays emotional and verbal abuse in a very raw way. In a way I am wondering how healthy it is for me to continue watching it. It takes me back a bit to when I was struggling so much with my mental illness. I know that this sounds weird, (and I have debated whether to include this or not), but I’m scared it’s going to give me ideas of how to respond to my illness such as biting etc.
At the same time, I think it is really important that mental illness is mainstreamed and normalized on TV. But does this normalize it or does it just make people wary of it?
I was just wondering what your thoughts were about the show and whether you have been enjoying it :) #spinningout #Anxiety #BipolarDisorder #Netflix
