What does autistic pride mean to you?

Saturday, June 18 is Autistic Pride Day and it got me thinking: What does autistic pride mean or look like to you? For me, it looks like giving myself the grace to leave situations that are overstimulating - or using my noise reduction earplugs in public. It's also not being ashamed of stimming in public.

Let me know what autistic pride looks like for you! I'd love to know.

To others on the spectrum out there: which do you prefer, identity-first language (autistic) or person-first language (person with autism)?

Personally, I prefer "autistic." Autism isn't something I can just pick up and carry with me, or put down, nor is it something I feel the need to separate from my being. Some people argue that "well, you wouldn't call a person with cancer, cancerous," but that's comparing apples to oranges. Cancer is a potentially fatal disease, whereas autism is a neurotype. It's a way of being; my operating system. We are all created to be who we are for a reason, and should embrace that! #AutisticPride #actuallyautistic
