What Is AAC?

What Is AAC?
Augmentative and Alternative Communication or (AAC) refers to tools, strategies, and systems that can be used to help support or replace spoken language for people with speech or language impairments. Not only that, but AAC can also help people with developmental disabilities like autism, cerebral palsy, or Down Syndrome express their thoughts, needs, and ideas. Last but not least, some examples of these tools, strategies, and systems range from low-tech options like picture boards to high-tech options like apps that produce voice output.

What Is Down Syndrome

What Is Down Syndrome
Down Syndrome is a genetic condition that is caused by an extra chromosome 21, resulting in 47 chromosomes instead of the usual 46. This extra genetic material alters the development of the body and brain, leading to certain physical features, developmental delays, and a risk of some health conditions. Last but not least, the good news is that most people with Down syndrome often have a wide range of abilities, can thrive, and live a healthy and productive happy life thanks to different kinds of therapies and educational supports.

I'm new here!

Hi, my name is Jessi. I'm here because I am in college for my junior year. I have lived and grown up with special needs including Bipolar Disorder and Aspergers and ADHD (Audhd). I have been stable on medication for over 12 years and am wanting to finally go back to college. I suffer every day with Anxiety as well as a lot of struggles with trying to function as a disabled student. My goal is to become a mental health counselor for children with special needs and learning disabilities. I want to become a help to kids like my counselors were for me. I want to save a child's life and end up doing foster care and have kids with autism and down syndrome, and other kids that "nobody wants". I want to save kids and become a support system for them.
