Diagnosed with FND at 24 and it changed my life

I am a 24 year old female that was fit and well until one day I fell over and never felt my right leg again. After weeks and weeks of investigations and tests in two different hospitals I was finally diagnosed with FND (Functional Neurological Disorder) This has changed my life as I have to learn to stand and walk again. It’s very tough both emotionally and mentally. I also have several other symptoms such as, seizures, chronic pain, persistent fatigue, can’t walk, weakness in arms, loss of balance and much more.

Many of us can agree that we have never heard of Functional Neurological Disorder and I was the same, until one day it changed my life and I wasn’t able to walk again. I am working with my physios trusting the process and trying to get my old self back!

FND comes with many symptoms and not enough of us know about it. I feel that I can and we all can make a difference by educating ourselves and raising awareness for FND.

I want to make a big difference and speak up and tell my story to the world on how it affected and how much it changed my life as a 24 year old female.

📊Common FND Symptoms📊

Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) is a debilitating condition that causes a wide variety of symptoms. Although there are lots of similarities in the symptoms that a person experiences, the variety of the symptoms & the severity of those symptoms differ greatly from one person to another. This is where ‘FND Bingo’ comes in – it is an interactive way to help to raise awareness of FND as a condition; shows the variety of symptoms associated with it & how these debilitating symptoms are as unique as the individual experiencing them. The original image, now known as the ‘FND Bingo Card’ (created by @functionallyjess), consists of 15 of the more common symptoms of FND – Functional Seizure, Dizziness, Walking Difficulty, Weakness, Dystonia, Migraine, Chronic Pain, Numbness, Memory Issues, Sleep Issues, Functional Tremors, Paralysis, Sensory Issues, Swallowing Issues & Spasms. A sample of 25 of these FND Bingo Cards indicate how common these symptoms are among people living with FND. No matter how FND impacts you, there are people who understand the challenges you face.

😔Nobody Should Feel Traumatised Because of Their Health😔

Nobody should ever be made to feel traumatised, especially because of their health or disability. Sadly, however, as with many chronic health conditions & disabilities, stigma is a major factor in the treatment of people living with FND. A study into the stigma towards those of us living with FND showed that 61% of individuals who completed the ‘Stigma Survey’ by FND Hope reported that they had felt TRAUMATISED because of their FND journey, while a further 18% were unsure whether they had felt traumatised or not. Thankfully, there were 21% of people who did not feel traumatised by their experiences, which is great. However this statistic should definitely be much higher than it currently is & that is why raising awareness of this debilitating condition is so important. Together we can help path the way for better acceptance, understanding & treatments for people living with FND. 💪🏻🧡💙

🚸🧡FND Affects Children!🧡🚸

Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) is a debilitating condition that most people have never heard of. I had never heard of FND until I was diagnosed with it & neither had the people around me. FND causes a wide variety of debilitating physical symptoms, cognitive impairment, chronic pain, chronic fatigue & can have a huge impact on a person’s mental health. This, like most chronic health conditions & disabilities, also heavily impacts the lives of those around you.
Sadly, this debilitating doesn’t only affect adults – it also impacts the lives of children! As adults, understanding & living with FND is extremely difficult, I can’t imagine how much more difficult it must be for children, their parents, families & friends.

🧡💙Shocking & Saddening FND Statistic!🧡💙

Living with the symptoms of FND is hard enough without having to also deal with the stigma associated with it too. Sadly, MORE THAN 80% of people living with FND feel that they have been treated dismissively and/or poorly because of their FND diagnosis. Nobody should ever have to experience the negative impact that stigma and dismissiveness treatment can have on a person’s mental health. This is why the work of the amazing FND charities, campaigners and patient advocates, is so vitally important – people living with FND need, and deserve, understanding, compassion, support, and above all, respect! 💪🏻🧡💙

Experience with service dogs?

I would love to talk to someone who has had a service dog for any of the following disorders or even psychiatric conditions more generally. I am increasingly becoming more disabled as time goes on and I feel I have no choice but to try one despite the costs. Would help easy the uncertainty to talk to others who have used them.

🚸🖍️Children get FND too!🖍️🚸

Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) is a debilitating condition that most people have never heard of. I had never heard of FND until I was diagnosed with it & I remember feeling like I was the only person on the planet who had this condition, especially as the people around me had never heard of FND before either. But this debilitating doesn’t only affect adults – it also impacts the lives of up to 20,000 children in the UK! As adults, understanding and living with FND is difficult. I can’t imagine how much more difficult it must be for children, and, of course, their parents, families and friends. That’s why the work of FND charities, websites & FND campaigners, is so important – everyone who lives, or cares for someone, adult or child, needs support and encouragement. Support groups like this one, or the online Peer Support Groups by FND Hope UK, are great sources of support.
So remember, no matter how FND is impacts your life: YOU ARE NOT ALONE!! 🧡💙
