Being a #doubleostomate

Recently, I went out of town to see family over the holiday (safely). While I was gone, I took what I thought was going to be enough pouches for the week. However, I ended up about 5 short because my colostomy kept blowing out (I blame my mom’s great cooking) and my dad had to pay out of pocket so I could get home without a massive clothing disaster on the airplane from a leaking bag. As it is, I had never used a pouch on the urostomy; since I wear depends, I just didn’t worry about it.

I tell you that to explain what happened while I was gone. I received supply deliveries at home, so I returned to find in excess of 300 pouches, in several different types. This, of course, prompted me to rethink the urostomy approach I’ve used. So, I started using some of the extra ones, on the urostomy in addition to the use on the colostomy.

Well, I’m happy to say that in the last week I’ve had just a single digit number of leaks from the urostomy — and have even managed to take a shower or two where I didn’t need to replace the pouches. This, plus the addition of an ostomy belt for the colostomy, is making me feel at least a little more confident in myself. Compared to just weeks ago, when I wanted to break down because the colostomy wouldn’t cooperate, this is a feeling I haven’t had in the two years that I’ve been a #doubleostomate . #OstomyBags #ostomylife

Happy National Ostomy Awareness Day!

National Ostomy Awareness Day is the first Saturday in October every year.

Girls With Guts is a registered non-profit that works support and empower women with inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease & ulcerative colitis) and/or ostomies through the building of sisterhood and self-esteem.

Some of us struggle to deal with all of the "baggage" that comes with an ostomy and that is okay. Some of us are empowered by our ostomy and that is okay, too.

Today, we bare our ostomies proudly. Whether you have an ostomy for IBD-related surgery, cancer, FAP, a birth related injury or any other circumstance - we are here for you!
