Hurtful comments from well-meaning people.

These are comments and questions I hear often. People don't usually know they're offensive or hurtful, but what they imply is ableist or dangerous.

"I hope your life calms down soon." For me, this often implies 'wow, another crisis? Get it together!' Because the person often stops talking to me soon after.

"OK, feel better, bye!" Again, if chronic illness or disability were as simple as dismissive wishes .... how lovely. And again, often said right before the person stops speaking to me for a long time.

"Wow, you have a lot of problems!" Translation: Girl, wtf is wrong with you?? Get it together or stay away from me! As if we bring it on ourselves, and as if disabilities or mental illness were contagious. Nope.

"You should try this diet/drug/doctor/prayer/mantra/oil/latest miracle cure -- my best friend's sister's cousin's niece's neighbor SWEARS by it! It's only $$$$, a total bargain. " No. Just, no.
Then there is doctors advice, which sometimes has nothing to do with our condition, or even the questions we're asking.... which is another post in itself. ##ChronicIllness ##Disability #Able ##MentalHealth ##Ableism
