What Is Fragile X Syndrome
Fragile X Syndrome is the most common inherited cause of intellectual disability. It results from a mutation in the FMR1 gene that stops the production of a vital brain protein (FMRP)which can lead to developmental, learning, and behavioral issues like anxiety, ADHD, and autism-like traits. Unfortunately, there is no cure for Fragile X Syndrome, but the good news is that early interventions like speech, occupational, and physical therapy and medications for mental health disorders or ADHD can significantly help manage symptoms, improve skills, and enhance the quality of life of people who have this syndrome. Oh and ongoing research is currently exploring gene therapies for people living with Fragile X Syndrome.

My name is Shannon. I am an occupational therapy student with my bachelors of science in special education.

I am currently seeking participants for a capstone research study. The aim of my research is to gather information about how school based instruction has impacted student’s ability to acquire skills needed to perform menstrual management tasks. This information is anonymously gathered through caregivers perspectives. Menstruation management significantly impacts quality of life, health, and school attendance of students. With information gained, I hope to one day transform how occupational therapists and school personnel can better promote autonomy of these women through intervention that meets their individualized needs.
