What are 3 personal boundaries you can set with yourself?

Now that we’ve discussed what boundaries are and how they look for us, let’s start to wind down this week’s challenge by setting three personal boundaries with ourselves. Remember that it’s totally OK to have needs and want to express them!

Here is Mighty staffer @xokat’s boundary list:

📱Not forcing herself to respond to texts right away if she needs a break from screen time or doesn’t have the emotional bandwidth to respond. It's very likely that nothing is an emergency!

💻 Shutting down her laptop when the work day is done and not getting on it until the next day — it helps to separate work from life since she works from home.

🗓️ Not making plans on Saturdays, as tempting as it is. (She desperately needs the recovery time!)

What do you find most challenging about enforcing your boundaries? In what ways can you improve?

Once we’ve gotten over the hurdle of identifying a limit or need and setting a boundary in response to that need, what’s next?

Well, the next step is to continuously enforce that boundary in ways we feel are best. This step can definitely be challenging! Enforcing a boundary takes work. But not to fear! We are ultimately in control of our boundaries and can work on improving them any time we want.

Mighty staffer @xokat says that her biggest challenge in enforcing boundaries is her people-pleasing tendencies. Thanks to the unreliability of her health which in turn makes her feel guilty and like she has to “make it up” to others, she tends to overcompensate by allowing others to skirt what she needs. Which, at the end of the day, hurts her more than helps. But she’s working hard to center her needs and make decisions from there!

What about you?

Think back to a moment when you stood up for yourself. What brought you to that point? How did you feel afterward?

Let’s start here: What even is a boundary? A boundary is a limit or barrier that separates two things from each other. When discussing our personal boundaries, we are establishing and identifying limits or needs based on something we feel is best for us.

Today’s challenge is to reflect on a time when you stood up for yourself and set a boundary. What brought you to that point? What feelings came up that influenced you to speak up? How did you feel after setting that boundary?

Write 1-3 sentences about the “turning point” in your health journey that’s had the most profound effect on you.

Let’s end this week of storytelling by — finally! — sharing a piece of our health journeys.

For today’s activity, we want you to write 1-3 sentences in the comments (or in your own post) about what you consider the “turning point” in your health journey to be — that one event or moment that’s had a significant effect on you. This could be when you received your diagnosis, the moment you decided to seek treatment, or even a time of clarity or hardship that changed or shifted your perspective.

We can’t wait to read them!

When you share your story, what are the main takeaways you want people to understand about you?

First things first: It’s impactful, powerful, and brave to share what you’ve experienced in your life. But here’s the next question on our minds — are you telling your story in a way that’s resonating the way you want? Has your audience grasped what you’ve shared and taken in the message you want to convey?

Mighty staffer @xokat always wants people to understand the invisible moments of chronic illness that happen between the big, obvious ones.

What about you?

When I share my story, I need ______ from that person or audience.

Sharing your story can make you feel a lot of things — overwhelmed, intimidated, liberated, and/or rewarded depending on where you are in your health or recovery journey. It can also feel like all the adjectives above at once.

Everyone has different levels of comfort and needs in times of vulnerability, and both parties can benefit from the telling or receiving of what you have to say.

When you are sharing your story, what do you need from the person or audience that’s listening to you? What would help you to feel safe and comfortable?

Mighty staffer @xokat appreciates a judgement-free space and prefers when the other person/people don’t readily offer advice or suggestions right after she shares.

🌈“Try to be a rainbow…”🌈

The world can feel like a dark & lonely, especially when you live with chronic illness or chronic pain. That’s why it’s so important to share a little bit of light by checking in on someone you know who might be struggling, sending a message to let someone know you’re thinking of them, or even simply sharing a smile as you pass. 💝🌈
