Finding clarity

There were times when depression felt like a war I had to win.

I tried everything to escape it. I kept searching for the fix, the breakthrough, the moment I would finally feel free. But the harder I fought, the more trapped I felt.

Then something shifted.

What if the answer wasn't in escaping the pain, but in allowing myself to be with it?

I stopped reacting. I stopped trying to force my way out. I just stayed. I sat in the silence and let the sadness speak.

And slowly, it did.

I began to understand what the depression was trying to show me. I began to feel a kind of peace—not because everything was okay, but because I had stopped abandoning myself.

If you're in the middle of something unbearable, try not to run. Just be here. Just breathe.

Sometimes the way forward begins by not moving at all.

Have you ever found clarity by staying with your pain instead of fighting it?

Also, I've started making videos about my recovery from depression and suicide from when I was a teen. If you or anyone you know is struggling with these issues and want help, click on one of the links below to watch:

I'm new here!

Hello, my name is Murat Gurdov.
I was born in 1982 in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan. In 2004, I suffered a severe spinal cord injury that left me completely paralyzed from the neck down — quadriplegia. Since then, I have lived bedridden, unable to move my arms or legs.
I live on the 4th floor of an apartment building without an elevator. My daily life is very challenging: I depend completely on my elderly mother and two sisters for all basic care — feeding, washing, dressing, and turning me to prevent bedsores. Because of my health problems, including diabetes and asthma, I need constant attention.
Despite these difficulties, I try to keep my mind active by reading, learning, and communicating through technology as much as possible. I live in a small, modest apartment with limited resources, but I hold on to hope and strength every day.
I want to share my story here to connect with others who understand what it means to live with a disability, and to raise awareness about the challenges many face in similar situations.
Thank you for taking the time to read my introduction.

Peace and the storm

I used to believe that healing meant the storm had to stop. That one day the thoughts would go quiet, the weight would lift, and I’d finally be free.

But the truth is, peace isn’t the absence of pain. It’s the ability to find stillness inside of it. I’ve learned how to stay with myself when the darkness comes. I’ve learned how to breathe, even when everything in me wants to disappear.

I still have days where I struggle. I still face thoughts that scare me. But now, I know I don’t have to run from them. I can sit with them. I can stay with myself. That’s peace. Not perfect, not polished, but real.

If you’re in the storm right now, you don’t need to escape it all at once. You just need one breath. One pause. One thread of hope to hold onto.

That’s enough. You’re enough.

Tell me—what brings you a moment of peace, even when things feel heavy?

What You Think, You Become

We’ve all heard, “You are what you eat.”
But have you ever stopped to ask:
What am I feeding my mind?

When we dwell on sadness, anger, or fear,
we slowly start to believe we are those things.
But your thoughts are not your identity.
They’re habits.
And you can change them.

🌿 Just like choosing nourishing food,
you can choose nourishing thoughts.

So ask yourself today:

💭 What am I thinking about?

💭 What do I want to become?

I really wish my mom gave a shit about me

It's been 2 weeks since I last talked to my mom. Even including texting. I've had a very busy week. Usually if call her, I talk about the big stuff, then I'd tell her what I've been eating for dinner lately. But my sister let me know my mom complains about our calls being a waste of her time. So by all means, I won't bother her anymore. I just wish she loved me. Instead she sees me as the mistake.
I was adopted at birth. 4 years later they had my middle sister and 2 years after that they had my baby sister. They can do no wrong in my mom's eyes and I can't do anything right.
I find myself wanting to call her tonight. I had some big appointments this week. Big changes to my diabetes meds. And tomorrow I'm nervous about having cortisone injections in my hips. But I know I'll feel better by Sunday morning.
Saturday is the curiosities and oddities expo in Detroit. I'm really excited and I'm gonna dress up cute and wear my puppy gear. I'll get plenty of pictures to share.

If you want to feel better mentally—start with your mornings.

Here are 3 quick mindset shifts you can practice each day that will transform your mood, your focus, and your relationships:

1️⃣ Remember how short life is.
Instead of focusing on what’s missing, think about the possibilities in front of you today.

2️⃣ Decide: Today will be good—no matter what.
You can’t control the world, but you can control how you respond to it.

3️⃣ Help others feel seen.
Instead of seeking attention, give connection. When you uplift others, you uplift yourself.

Which one will you try tomorrow morning? 🌅👇

Gratitude

Gratitude is how we remind ourselves that life is already offering little gifts, even on the hard days. It’s not about giving up on growth — it’s about letting appreciation and ambition live side by side. You can dream big and still love where you are. Just take a moment, right now, to say ‘thank you’ for one ordinary thing. It softens everything.

What’s one thing you can be grateful for right now?

Strawberries

My granddaughters found this turtle snacking on wild strawberries in the yard. I think this little guy has the right idea!
Strawberries are a nutritious and delicious fruit that provide a variety of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Here is a breakdown of their nutritional content per 100 grams (about 1 cup):
Calories: 32
Carbohydrates: 7.7 grams
Fiber: 2 grams
Sugars: 4.9 grams
Fat: 0.3 grams
Protein: 0.7 grams
Vitamin C: 59 milligrams (98% DV)
Folate: 40 micrograms (10% DV)
Potassium: 204 milligrams (4% DV)
Manganese: 0.1 milligram (5% DV)
Strawberries are low in calories and fat.
They are a good source of vitamin C, an antioxidant that supports immune function.
Strawberries are also a good source of potassium, which helps regulate blood pressure.
They contain folate, an essential nutrient for pregnant women and cell growth.
Strawberries are a low-sugar fruit, making them a suitable option for people with diabetes or those watching their sugar intake.
They are cholesterol-free and have a negligible amount of sodium.
So, take it from a turtle, strawberries are delicious and nutritious!
