Happily Ever After #MightyPoets
We walked the narrow cobbled streets,
Crossed the railway line,
Through the meadow, and straight down to the lake.
The gentle breeze caressed your hair.
I held your hand in mine.
The sunlight traced the contours of your face.
We talked for hours and hours about the wonders and the horrors of the world
As we lay on the grass and watched the clouds pass by.
We learned so much about each other and about ourselves.
We explored our inner feelings, tried to find the reasons why.
You loved to stand upon the shore and gaze into the water.
You said that our reflections spoke the truth.
I was always scared to look in case you weren't there.
It always felt just like a dream being with you.
------
The seasons passed, your beauty stayed.
We knew our love would never fade.
We made our plans, we lived our dreams.
A fairytale that never seemed to end.
But we both knew one day we'd reach the final chapter.
We'd read that famous sentence and then softly close the book ,
And so for now we'd stand upon the shore in our embrace,
As you gazed into the water...
I was always scared to look.
------
Now we walk down past the office blocks
Cross the railway line,
Through the car park and straight down to the lake.
The gentle breeze blows in your hair.
I hold your hand in mine.
The sun lights up the contours of your face.
We talk for hours and hours.
I tell you all about what I did yesterday
As we sit on the bench and watch the world pass by.
I tell you that I'm still learning things about myself.
We explore my inner feelings, try to find the reasons why.
We stand upon the shore and look into those mirrored waters.
You said that our reflections spoke the truth.
Now I know that you were wrong. They say that you're not here.
But I know that I'm still holding onto you.
------
Though seasons pass and memories fade,
My love for you will always stay
Right here with me, and in my dreams
The fairytale, it never seems to end.
But I am ready now to read the final chapter.
We both know the closing sentence.
We don't even need to look.
So someday soon I'll close my eyes and feel your sweet embrace.
We'll escape those lying waters, and together...
We'll softly close the book.
