How was your mental health in September?

One way I check in on my mental health is through bi-weekly checkpoints, and the beginning of each month is one of them. The first week often feels overwhelming, but taking time to reflect and write about the previous month helps me create a clearer path forward. I ask myself: What moments were meaningful to me? What had the biggest impact on me?

For me, September was challenging. I had to face the discomfort of letting go of things that didn’t turn out the way I thought they would. Moving forward, I’m focusing on what I can control rather than fixating on what I can’t. I’m also practicing acknowledging my feelings without letting negative emotions consume me.

✏️ My affirmation for October: I prioritize myself. I deserve the best love and care.

How was your mental health last month? How are you paving your path forward? What moments mattered most to you?

What mental health symptom is the hardest for you to manage right now?

Many factors can impact your mental health — your environment, interactions with others, the time of year, weather or seasonal changes, and even unexpected life events. These influences can make certain symptoms feel harder to manage than others, whether that’s anxiety, depression, intrusive thoughts, fatigue, irritability, or something else entirely.

Right now, I’ve been noticing changes in my sleep patterns. I’m going to bed later and later, and insomnia tends to show up for me around the fall season. That means I need to be more intentional about my bedtime routine, and make sure I’m addressing any ruminating thoughts with my therapist so they don’t spill over into my work, personal life, or goals. Sleep disruption over long periods of time can be a big red flag for both my anxiety and depression.

What mental health symptom feels the hardest for you to manage right now? How do you cope when it shows up?

Mental health to me means...

We all have mental health because we have brains and minds to take care of, but the way we do that looks different for each of us. Whether we’re living with a diagnosis, navigating challenges, or learning to prioritize our mental health alongside our physical health, the ways we cope with stress and manage our emotions are personal and varied, shaped by our experiences, resources, and the support systems we rely on.

What does mental health mean to you? How do you care for your own mental health? And if you live with a mental health condition, what feels most important to consider as you move through treatment, self-care, or connecting with community resources?

Poem

#SchizoaffectiveDisorder You say it’s not real—

That it’s all in my head.

But you don’t know how deep

Those thoughts can spread.

It’s not just a worry,

Or something I fear—

It’s as if the danger

Is truly right here.

When I’m in an episode,

My mind doesn’t lie—

It shows me the trap,

The watcher, the spy.

You scratch your cheek—

To me, it’s a code.

A message, a signal,

A path being showed.

A car could explode.

A room might be tapped.

I’m not playing pretend.

My mind has me trapped.

You tell me, “Relax—

That’s not really true.”

But my brain screams louder

Than reason, or you.

The world starts to twist

In a way I can't fight.

Even shadows by day

Can feel deadly at night.

You might have a thought

And just let it go—

But mine plants a seed

And demands it to grow.

I can't just dismiss it

With logic or doubt—

Because when it takes over,

There’s no easy way out.

I don’t want attention.

I’m not making a scene.

I just want some peace

Inside my machine.

Please don’t tell me

To “just stay strong”—

I’ve been battling monsters

All my life long.

If you truly care,

Then listen, just hear—

That when I say I'm afraid,

It's not just a fear.

It’s a storm in my chest,

A war in my mind,

And the world goes quiet

But never kind.

I know what’s imagined,

I know what’s true—

But when I’m in it,

I can't sort the two.

There are days I seem fine—

And you might believe it.

But silence and smiles

Can both be deceiving.

I laugh when I can,

I try to belong,

But the feeling of “other”

Has lingered so long.

When help comes in phrases

That miss what I mean,

It adds to the noise

Inside my machine.

“Just go for a walk.”

“Have you tried being grateful?”

I nod, stay polite—

But the weight is still fatal.

What I need is connection,

Not fixing or cures—

Just someone to say,

“I’ve been there before.”

Your pain has a name.

Your fear has a shape.

And though it may twist,

You’re not some mistake.

So if you’re like me—

In the dark with your doubt—

Know this: you're not broken.

You’re finding your route.

And if you're outside it,

But wanting to see—

Just sit here beside me.

Be quiet with me.

Living with Bipolar Disorder: Psychosis #BipolarDisorder #Psychosis #Schizophrenia

Here’s a link to a blog I wrote explaining the basics about Psychosis. I haven’t included any off my personal experiences with it as I believe that there is a multitude of different ways that you can be impacted by it, and the causes that can affect the onset of it are varied and complex.

As always, if you have any questions or comments about the topic, please feel free to reach out in the comments section below.

Living with Bipolar Disorder: Psychosis

Psychosis is when people lose some contact with reality. This might involve seeing or hearing things that other people cannot see or hear (hallucinations) and believing things that are not actually…

TRUE or FALSE: I find it difficult to talk about my depression with others.

Talking about mental health can be really challenging, especially if you’re not used to being vulnerable with others. On top of that, there’s often stigma around opening up about conditions like depression.

It took me years to even come to terms with the fact that I needed help. It was uncomfortable to admit that I couldn’t do everything on my own. But after finding resources and people who made me feel safe (The Mighty being one of them!), it became easier to share my story and begin therapy.

What has your experience been like?
