What’s a question you’re sick of being asked about your disability?

“How do you eat?”
“What happened to you?”
“Do you have sex?”
“Have you tried yoga?”
“Did you pray about it?”

If you’re disabled, there’s a pretty good possibility you’ve heard one of the above statements at least once in your life. While we’ve come a decent way as a society, we still have a long way to go in how we view and interact with disabled folks (hint: we’re humans! cool!).

In honor of Disability Pride Month, share those eye-rolling questions with us below. 👀

P.S. A gentle reminder for friends without disabilities, a good barometer for if a question is appropriate or not is this: Would you ask the question to someone without a disability? If the question now feels odd, then chances are it’s not appropriate to ask someone who’s disabled either!

Disability Pride #DisabilityPride #InvisibleDisability #Disability #Fibromyalgia

July is disability pride month and I want to say that I am proud of what I can do despite my mobility and cognitive problems associated with fibromyalgia. I am also hoping that with Disability Pride we can all defeat ableism. People with disabilities are also a minority group and we are often subjected to negative media portrayals and job discrimination, even ableism in the family. I "came out" as disabled a year ago when I visited family members I haven't seen for a long time. They know of my battles and if I haven't educated them on fibromyalgia, they probably would make me feel invalidated. There is no shame in having visible and invisible disabilities.

Instead of beating myself up for past failures, I choose to embrace the things I’ve accomplished

Letting go of visions and dreams unachieved is very hard for me. I can often feel like a failure, or that I let people down, or that I’m weak and haven’t reached my potential and these thoughts have weighed me down in the past …but instead of beating myself up I always try to live in the moment…. I’m proud of the journeys I’ve been on, of the things I have accomplished, and sometimes I just have to simply remind myself that I’m a survivor in many ways…so I write about the story I ‘m actually living with pride and a sense of accomplishment… #Depression #Anxiety #BipolarDepression #BipolarDisorder #MentalHealth #PTSD #Addiction #HIVAIDS #positive #Disability #accomplishment #positivethoughts #DisabilityPride #SuccessStory #SOBER #Joy #StoryTellingSavesLives #happyconfidentme #thankful #Gratitude
