What’s an ableist policy you’ve encountered at work or school?

This morning our Mighty editors were discussing ableism and how rampant it can be in workplaces and school environments. Have you ever encountered an ableist policy?

Here are a few that come to mind: needing a doctor’s note for every single sick day, limiting the amount of you can take off after surgery, or attendance as a part of someone’s grade.

Share your experiences with us in the comments below. ⬇️

P.S. This is the story that got us talking: www.buzzfeed.com/kristatorres/tiktok-woman-overthinking-how-...

What changes would you like to see made to the mental health care system?

Something I think almost everyone in our Mighty community can agree upon is that the mental health care systems across the world are not perfect. Some are far worse than others. It’s something I reflect on often with equal parts desperation and absolute rage.

I’m curious to know what you would love to see changed and whether it’s practical, idealistic, or structural. Here are two of mine:

🏥 More nuanced understanding from practitioners about the relationship between mental and physical health, and how pain impacts both sides of a person.

💊 More accessible insurance coverage for therapy, medications, and treatments.

Share your thoughts with me in the comments! Excited to read your ideas, which I know will be incredibly insightful.

What’s a harmful misconception society has about chronic pain?

This weekend I wrote an op-ed against the New York Times about a harmful six-piece editorial series they did about chronic pain. The series is called “The Pain Brain.” You can read my story below ⬇️

themighty.com/2021/11/new-york-times-chronic-pain-series-har...

In it, they do several things that really upset me: automatically discussing the opioid epidemic and the role chronic pain patients play in it, explicitly stating that chronic pain is simply repressed emotion, and invalidating/blaming pain on the person who lives with it. 😡

What do you think is a big misconception people have about chronic pain? Let’s amplify our own voices today.

P.S. As someone who has lived with near-constant pain for 18 years, I see you. Your hurt is so valid and not your fault. We deserve more. 💯

What’s your opinion on trigger warnings? Do they help or harm?

Welcome to our new series 🔥 Mighty Hot Takes 🔥, where we’ll discuss our thoughts on breaking health news, cutting-edge studies, current events, and more. What makes this different from every other corner of the internet? The comments section includes and values the perspectives of people who ACTUALLY live with health conditions. What a concept, right?

This week’s topic is trigger/content warnings, inspired by a recent article in The New Yorker. You can read it below. ⬇️

www.newyorker.com/news/our-columnists/what-if-trigger-warnin...

The general conclusion is this: “New psychological research suggests that trigger warnings do not reduce negative reactions to disturbing material—and may even increase them.”

Do you find yourself more curious about content with a trigger warning on it? Or do they help to keep you away from content that could possibly be upsetting? Let’s discuss.

Would you consider getting a pacemaker to treat your depression?

Welcome to our new series Mighty Hot Takes 🔥, where we’ll discuss our thoughts on breaking health news, cutting-edge studies, current events, and more. What makes this different from every other corner of the internet? The comments section includes and values the perspectives of people who ACTUALLY live with the conditions. What a concept, right?

First up: a possible new way to treat depression.

Researchers are beginning to enroll depression patients into clinical studies to see the effect brain stimulation (via something like a pacemaker) has on their symptoms. You can read more about it in this piece from CNN ⬇️

Thoughts? Is this something you would try?
