#CeliacDisease
Celiac disease is a genetic autoimmune disease characterized by intestinal damage when gluten is ingested. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye and barley. It is important to note that celiac disease is not a food allergy and symptoms are much different than those of a food allergy. Celiac disease is hard to diagnose because there are over 200 symptoms associated with it. Some common symptoms may include (but are not limited to) abdominal bloating and pain, chronic diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, weight loss, fatigue and irritability and behavioral issues. This condition is diagnosed by doctors who typically administer two different blood tests. There is no known cure or medication for celiac disease. Patients affected must go on a strict gluten-free diet and avoid products that contain gluten.
Organizations exist to provide support and resources to those affected by celiac disease.
