How do you manage or cope with negative self-talk?
The way we communicate, engage, and connect with ourselves—how we relate to our thoughts and process our experiences through inner dialogue—is all part of our self-talk. Whether positive, negative, or neutral, it can influence and affect how we perceive ourselves, navigate challenges, and move through the world.
I’ve struggled with negative self-talk for a long time, especially in how I interpret difficult experiences and respond to mental health triggers. I often catastrophize, sometimes unknowingly, because it feels safer to anticipate the worst than to be caught off guard. I’m also very hard on myself when I make mistakes or don’t meet perceived expectations.
Since entering recovery a few years ago, I’ve been learning how to be kinder to myself. Using neutral and self-soothing affirmations has helped me cope with cycles of depression, anxiety, and panic. It takes a lot of intentional effort, and sometimes it still feels unnatural after years of being so self-critical, but I’ve come a long—and I know I’m in a much better place than I was in my teen years.
