#SpinalMuscularAtrophy
Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a genetic, neuromuscular disorder that affects the part of the nervous system that controls voluntary muscle movement. It involves the loss of motor neurons in the spinal cord, and the onset, severity and progression of symptoms vary greatly. Symptoms include muscle weakness, poor muscle tone, limpness, developmental delays, loss of strength of the respiratory muscles and difficulty swallowing or eating. Treatments include physical and occupational therapy, mobility support, respiratory care and feeding support in more severe cases.
Organizations exist to help and support those dealing with spinal muscular atrophy in their lives.
