App to manage Crohn's ... need your thoughts!

I’m a longtime member of the chronic illness crew—been navigating Crohn’s for almost a decade now. On top of that, some of my closest friends deal with things like IBS, food allergies, bloating, etc…. If you’re here, you probably know how much of a struggle it can be to figure out what foods help and what foods hurt.

Recently, I started working on something I hope can make a real difference in our community. I’m building an app to help people like us without just relying on medication, hopefully leading to have fewer bad days and more control over our choices! 💪

But here’s the thing: I don’t want to base it exclusively on my experience or just guess at what other people need, I want this to benefit all of us so would love to know:

What problems do you face when it comes to food and symptoms?

Are you already using any apps to manage your health? If so, which ones? What do you love or hate about them?

What features would make the perfect app for you?

If you could have a dream solution for managing your food triggers and symptoms, what would it look like?

I know this struggle all too well, and I want this app to actually help people - not just be another thing that sits unused on your phone. If you have a minute, I’d love to hear about your experiences. Your input could really help shape this into something that works for all of us. 🙏

Thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts, and sending you all a little extra patience and strength for the journey. 💚

Looking forward to hearing your stories,

Autism and Borderline Personality Disorder….. the misery experienced by loved ones is immense.

Living with my chronically ill, autistic, BPD, young adult daughter is like living with an abusive spouse ( I would know cause I lived with one for 16 years before divorcing him). I can’t kick her out cause she isn’t totally capable of living on her own and doesn’t have much income and I don’t have any family that she could go live with. She doesn’t drive either so is totally dependent on me to get her to her part time job and frequent doctor appointments. However I am chronically ill too with several difficult conditions and work full time and care for my youngest daughter that is totally disabled from her chronic illnesses and it is just too much to always deal with the continual cycle of ups and downs she goes through due to her mental and developmental diagnoses. She is on medication that is helping some to stabilize her moods and help her severe anxiety, but she still goes into really awful episodes where her thinking is all over the place and she lashes out verbally and accuses me of things that don’t even make sense. She yells and cussed at me, calls me names and says I’m stupid and don’t really love her. She does the same to her sister but on a lesser scale than with me. In those episodes I can’t reason with her and she is determined that I’m causing her problems. When she is clear headed she can be kind and loving, but she always has another episode before long that is horrible for me to deal with. I feel I’m being verbally and emotionally abused just like I was from my ex- husband. I want a peaceful life and I just can’t seem to ever achieve it due to the whole situation. Has anyone else had experience with this kind of thing? I would really appreciate input. #Fibromyalgia #AutismSpectrumDisorder #BorderlinePersonalityDisorder #chronicmigraine #ADHD #Anxiety #Depression #ChronicFatigueSyndrome #Dysautonomia #UlcerativeColitis #EoE #OCD #DisorderedEating #InterstitialCystitis #Endometriosis #IBS #FoodAllergies

Hitting a wall.

How many of you have had to quit school due to chronic health problems?

WARNING ⚠️ the rest of this post is lengthy!!!

I have been working on my bachelors in community health through online courses (one class at a time) for the past seven years. A few months prior to beginning my degree program I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia following a car wreck that required a neck fusion surgery. From there my chronic illness diagnoses have continued to accumulate. I now have chronic migraine, endometriosis, interstitial cystitis, chronic fatigue, degenerative disc disease, tinnitus, IBS, C-PTSD, and a long list of food and environmental allergies. I have 2 sons and 2 daughters. My youngest son (15yr) has serious ADHD. Both of my daughters (21yr & 20yr) have long lists of chronic health conditions. They live with me and probably will for their whole lives due to the impact of the disability that their issues cause. Neither girl can drive either. The oldest has Asperger’s, fibromyalgia, Ehlers Danlos, ADHD, C-PTSD, severe anxiety, depression, Eosinophilic Esophagitis, IBS, mild Ulcerative Colitis, numerous food allergies and possible Borderline Personality Disorder. The youngest has Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Dysautonomia, C-PTSD, depression, anxiety, disordered eating, restless legs, Eosinophilic Esophagitis, constant skin picking, and numerous food allergies. All three of us girls and my youngest boy has severe sleeping problems. Me and both my girls have applied for and been turned down for disability. Up until 2022 I had been a stay-at-home, homeschooling mom. At the beginning of 2022 me and my 2 girls and youngest son ( oldest son is in college and pretty much living on his own) loaded up and left my narcissistic abusive husband of 16 yrs. and began to start over in a tiny apartment in a small town with me re-entering the work force and starting a full time job in retail and officially divorcing him at the end of that year. My youngest daughter has since tried to commit suicide twice and my oldest has had several mental breaks that were extremely hard to deal with. Throughout the whole time I have continued with my school classes. Determined to finish what I started. However, my health has continued to decline from all my illnesses and the stress of my life and it is taking a toll on my cognitive abilities. I took a 8 month break from my classes but have started back recently and I’m struggling to keep up with the assignments and not learning as I know I should be. I only have 6 classes left, that will take me the next year to complete due to the schedule I’m following, but my body, mind and finances seem to be making it extremely hard for me to keep going. I’m really considering quitting, but feel like I would be a real failure if I didn’t finish it.

Some interesting Facts from Netflix's New Documentary, 'Hack Your Health: The Secrets to your Gut'

The gut is the center of a biomedical revolution. This whole field is disrupting modern medicine.

Autism, Depression, Anxiety, Parkinsons, and Cancer are ALL related to the gut microbiome

Our gut affects our whole body. The gut is the second brain. Our brains have never existed without signals coming from the gut.

70% of our immune system lives in our gut.

You get your first habitable microbes when you are born out of your mother's womb. We shape our gut microbiome based on our experiences. The relationships you have, the pets you have, exercise, stress, the food you eat. Because of this, everyone has different microbiomes. It is a collection of microbial memories.

Knowing the microbiome is the key to health is key because you can't change your genes. BUT you can change your microbes by simple edits to your diet and lifestyle.

The modern-day microbiome is pretty unhealthy and is pushing up to this prevalent rise in chronic conditions such as hypertension, food allergies, diabetes, obesity, etc. The way we think about disease needs to change.

Changes to our environment. Western diet. the way babies are born (c-section), baby formula, sanitation, and antibiotics, all lead to decreased microbiome diversity, Exactly what we see in today's industrialized microbiome.

Currently, in the states, 60% of the calories eaten are ultra-processed and ultrally refined. This strips it of its natural ingredients and adds in a ton of processed sugars and chemicals.

When you look at quote healthy labels, it is hard to depict what is even in it. Most healthy labels are full of sugars and processed chemical components. Because of this, it is very hard to navigate what you should be eating. The food and wellness world is incredibly confusing.

Current recommendations in the United States recommend 28-40g of fiber per day, HOWEVER on average we are only eating 15g at most in the average American diet. The field of microbiome science is realizing we need to be eating access to 50g of fiber per day. If you don't feed your microbes fiber, they start to eat you. If you stop eating dietary fiber, the microbes need to start eating something. If there is no fiber, it will start to eat away at your mucosal gut lining and spread to various parts of your body, causing inflammation all over. Which can lead to many diseases such as IBD or IBS.

If a gut microbiome is very diverse and has a different variety of bacteria, then it can adapt to what life throws at us. A bouquet of possibilities.

Allergy friendly tube feeding

I'm wondering if anyone has found a feeding tube product that is GRAIN free , SOY free, and DAIRY free ?

I am currently at Stanford and they have put in a NJ but then tried to give me a product with brown rice in it which I am allergic to . They have now properly documented my food allergies are now working to find a product that I can tolerate but are having no luck. What we are finding is everything that is dairy, soy and gluten free has brown rice or corn in it and I can't tolerate any grains.

I'm starting to loose hope that I'm ever going to get nutrition in me .I've been dehidrated and slowly starving for over a year and a half and I just want to give up. All of my medical team was very aware of my food allergies and did not do their research to find a product before advising me to get this tube placed so now, 3 days into my NJ with no nutrition and I feel like it is all up to me to figure out. So I'm reaching out to all my wonderful Mightys to ask for help in his task . Thank you all 💞

#ChronicFatigueSyndrome Pituiitary and Adrenal Dysfunction, and Treatment #MyalgicEncephalomyelitis

Three underlying causes for CFS can be hypothalamus and/or pituitary and/or adrenal dysfunction. The hypothalamus talks to the pituitary gland which tells the adrenal glands to make cortisol, described here www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditions-and-diseases/adrenal-glands. I haven’t tested my hypothalamus so I won’t cover it here. I do have pituitary and adrenal dysfunction.

Patients do blood and urine cortisol level tests to determine adrenal function. This article, The Role of Cortisol in Adrenal Dysfunction | Holtorf Medical Group describes what cortisol does. I also just read about saliva testing for this. I regularly have a blood test done that determines my cortisol levels.

The articles Adrenal Dysfunction - Holtorf Medical Group Adrenal Dysfunction and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome - Holtorf M... and mosscenterforintegrativemedicine.com/conditions-diagnosis/fa... discuss symptoms, testing, and treatment from two different medical facilities, Holtorf Medical Group in California and Georgia, and Moss Center for Integrative Medicine in California.

I’ll let you read those articles and jump into treatment. I think two things prevent the treatment of CFS/ME. The first is a lack of knowledge of and/or access to CFS/ME specialists, who I define as doctors who know the underlying causes of CFS/ME and treat them, or at least tell you where you need to go to get that treatment if they can’t provide all of it. The second is a lack of funds to see specialists, get testing done, and pay for treatment.

As a result, I’m going to start with treatment you can do at home without having to pay for testing or medicine or supplements, beginning with two things that can negatively impact your adrenal glands, diet and stress.

Here are some diets to keep in mind with adrenal dysfunction and CFS/ME. Seventy percent of CFS patients have Fibromyalgia, so you can choose this diet Fibromyalgia Diet: What to Eat, What to Avoid - Holtorf Medical Group The Integrative Medicine article above specified another diet for fatigue. I don’t have Fibromyalgia, but do have another autoimmune condition and immune deficiency. I was told by my Holtorf Medical Group doctors to eat lean meats and vegetables, and avoid sugar, caffeine, alcohol, and gluten. I am allowed to eat small amounts of Stevia. These diets do have similarities. It’s important to know your food allergies as well and avoid those.

Reducing stress will also help alleviate adrenal issues. This article suggest some ways to do this, Why Do Stress and Adrenals Go Hand In Hand? - Holtorf Medical Group although pushing beyond your physical abilities is a definite no.

Just diet and stress reduction don’t necessarily solve all of your adrenal issues. Correct testing can tell you which hormones you may need to supplement. I would be remiss if I didn’t include this article on adrenal glands and Fibromyalgia as well, Adrenal Dysfunction and Fibromyalgia - Holtorf Medical Group which lists the hormones that can be affected.

And don’t forget that adrenal issues may point to hypothalamus and/or pituitary dysfunction. The pituitary gland controls hormones. An MRI of my pituitary gland showed that I have to go to an endocrinologist to narrow my diagnosis down to one of two possible problems, a mini tumor or Rathke cleft cyst. I do take supplements and compounded medication for hormone issues.

Best wishes to all of you with CFS/ME.
