#AskMe : What is the relationship between long-haul COVID-19 and migraine?

You asked, an expert answered! 💡

🧠 Here’s what migraine specialist Dr. Berk had to say:

“Many viral illnesses actually worsen migraine and are associated with headache, as well as muscle pains and aches.

COVID-19 is also associated with acute worsening of headache in many people, and in people who have a predisposition for migraine, that headache will most likely be a migraine like headache.

Long-haul COVID symptoms frequently include headache as well — and again for people with a predisposition for migraine that headache is migraine-like.”

#AskMe : Why does opiate withdrawal trigger a migraine?

You asked, an expert answered! 💡

🧠 Here’s what migraine specialist Dr. Berk had to say:

“Opiates affect specific neurotransmitter receptors of the brain.

When these neurotransmitters are switched on and off abnormally, the brain of someone who has migraine responds by producing a host of inflammatory neurotransmitters that propagate migraine.”

#AskMe : What is the relationship between migraine and bowel movements?

You asked, an expert answered! 💡

🧠 Here’s what migraine specialist Dr. Berk had to say:

“The GI system can be affected before, after, or during a migraine. Most famously, many people experience nausea and vomiting during a migraine.

Before and after a migraine, during periods of time we call the migraine “prodrome” and “postdrome,” the neurotransmitters that propagate migraine can lead to other GI symptoms, often either diarrhea or constipation.

Severe chronic migraine can lead to a slowing of the normal movements of the GI tract, called gastroparesis.”

#AskMe : What is the correlation between migraine and vertigo?

You asked, an expert answered! 💡

🧠 Here’s what migraine specialist Dr. Berk had to say:

“Vertigo can be a symptom of migraine aura and precede the migraine attack, and it can be a symptom associated with the migraine attack -- like light and sound sensitivity.

There are many areas of the brain which, if stimulated, can lead to vertigo symptoms -- a sensation of movement when nothing is moving.

If these areas are affected by abnormal electrical activity of the brain prior to the migraine pain happening, the sensation is a migraine aura. If it happens at the same time as the migraine attack it will manifest as a migraine associated symptom.”

#AskMe : What factors influence migraine location? Why do some attacks favor a particular side?

You asked, an expert answered! 💡

🧠 Here’s what migraine specialist Dr. Berk had to say:

“There aren’t great reasons why migraine specifically manifests in specific places. That said, migraine is less side- or location-specific than many other headaches. For instance, cluster headache always presents on the same side, whereas migraine migrates around the head.

Even people who experience on one side more than the other or in one location, almost always also experience pain in other locations around the head.”
