How Often Should You Replace Your Diabetic Supplies? A Practical Replacement Schedule

diabetescare.doko.md

Taking meds and checking sugar is important — but using fresh supplies is just as critical. Old or reused items can cause wrong readings, infections, or poor insulin delivery.

Why Replacement Matters

✔ Accurate blood sugar readings

✔ Safer injections & fewer infections

✔ Effective insulin & medications

✔ Better long-term glucose control

Simple Replacement Guide

🩸 Blood Sugar Testing

• Test strips: Single use | Replace monthly

• Lancets: Every use (or at least daily)

• Glucometer: Every 2–5 years or if damaged

📊 CGM Users

• Sensors: Every 7–14 days (brand dependent)

• Transmitters: Every 3–12 months

• Overpatches: As needed

💉 Insulin Supplies

• Opened insulin: Use within 28 days (some up to 42)

• Pen needles & syringes: Every injection

• Pump sets & reservoirs: Every 2–3 days

💊 Medications

• Follow refill dates

• Never use expired pills

• Replace pill organizers every 6–12 months

⚠️ Low Sugar Emergency Items

• Glucose tabs / gels: Every 6–12 months

• Juice & snacks: Check expiry

• Glucagon: Replace before expiry

🦶 Foot & Safety Care

• Lotions: 6–12 months

• Bandages & antiseptic: Check dates

• Sharps container: Replace when ¾ full

Pro Tips

✔ Keep a monthly supply checklist

✔ Order refills early

✔ Store supplies neatly by category

Many patients avoid shortages by using telehealth care like Doko MD, which helps manage prescriptions, refills, and home delivery easily.

Any tips/advice for weight loss and clear skin?

I am on medications for my mental health and it makes me feel hungry plus I have really bad acne scars on my face because my dad took me to a dietitian a few years ago and the pill they gave me caused me to have marks all over my face. The pill was called Adipex. I did lose the weight but a few years later I ended up gaining back all the weight and even more weight than I was before

Feeling Stuck

Hello everybody, I hope everyone is doing well this December though it is very cold and I have resorted to using a heated blanket.
I’m feeling a little stuck at the moment. Around 5 years ago my A1C was 9.3% and my average glucose was 220. I was told by a family member I wasn’t diagnosed with diabetes or anything.
But I feel like whatever it is creeping back up in my life again.
-Blurred vision
-Extreme hunger
-Slow healing sores
-Tingling/Numbness
-Fatifue
-Increased bathroom trips
-Lightheadedness/Dizzy
-My hands shake
-Irritability
I’m not sure how I would ask a doctor about this but I’m getting a little concerned because diabetes’s does run in my family.

Happy Diabirthday to me

I got my CWD (Children with Diabetes) award for 25 years of type 1 diabetes! Just wanted to share this milestone. It was weirdly emotional to get the medal in the mail and be recognized for one of my hardest invisible battles. 💙

And no, I did not eat too much sugar as a kid. It was a total coincidence being diagnosed on Halloween! Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease. 👍
*Been asked that question soooo much* 😅

What’s a lifestyle change you’ve had to make because of your autoimmune condition?

Having an autoimmune condition can affect your life in many ways due to the unpredictability and fluctuations of symptoms, changes in energy levels, and impacts on your overall health and productivity.

What lifestyle changes have you made because of your health? Why were these changes important to you? How did making them make you feel?

I'm new here!

Hi, my name is Type1diabeticfor50yr. I'm here because I have not had a day without major pain since I was in my 20s. Looking for advice/support on how to manage pain and how to communicate with doctors and others who don't understand. Coworkers my age think I must be lying/exaggerating because they have no pain. Even after many surgeries for carpal tunnel, cubital tunnel, tennis elbow, trigger fingers, frozen shoulders, and frequent cortisone injections I am not taken seriously. I like to work and keep complaints to a minimum, even though I hurt every day. Some days, I am in so much pain I cannot do my job. I also have arthritis and bone spurs in my hands and throughout my body. I have one finger joint that has fused, and others that are getting there. Having Type 1 diabetes for 50 years has certainly contributed, since it is an autoimmune disease and causes inflammation. I keep it well controlled and have no outward signs of the disease. I follow an anti-inflammatory diet. People think since I look healthy, I couldn't possibly be in pain. I joke and laugh a lot, so I'm perceived as happy and healthy. Humor is how I've always dealt with pain. Anyone else?

I'm new here!

Hi, my name is Sherlock32. I'm here because I need support with my depression, neurologic disorder that prevents me from working as a nurse, and loneliness since nursing was my identity. I can't find a new dream, new hopes or desires, or a reason to live.
