You are still becoming.

One of the cruelest things about depression is that it can make the future feel impossible.

Not because the future is hopeless.

But because depression changes the way you see it.

It can convince you that you’ve already missed your chance.

That you’ve fallen too far behind.

That your story is already over.

But feelings are not always facts.

Some of the strongest people you know once believed they would never make it through what they were facing.

And yet they did.

Healing does not always begin with confidence.

Sometimes it begins with surviving one more day.

Sometimes it begins with refusing to give up on yourself.

You are still becoming.

Have you ever gone through a period where you genuinely believed things would never get better?

Also, if you're going through a tough time right now, I want you to know that I post daily mental health videos about how to deal with painful thoughts. So if you or anyone you know is struggling and wants help, click on one of the links below or write me if you have any questions you want me to answer:

Free write Friday!

Now that we’ve explored journaling as a self-care tool — thank you for sharing, by the way! — let’s take a moment to put it all into action and write. ✍️

In the comments below, in your own 52 Small Things post, or in a journal, write a few lines about anything that’s been on your mind. This can be something that’s been challenging for you, a health update you want to share with the community (or keep record of), a list of words that describe how you’re feeling, or something you’ve been working on and are proud of yourself for.

Feel free to be as creative or as structured as you like. 💖

Aside from writing, what else helps you process your thoughts?

There are so many different ways you can process your feelings, emotions, and experiences. There is writing, of course, but let’s use today to brainstorm OTHER methods you find helpful in self-reflection.

Some examples could be drawing, taking a walk, or perhaps even talking to a therapist, friend, or trusted loved one.

Mighty staffer @sparklywartanks does her best thinking when she’s talking with her therapist or her mom. These conversations help her gain a different perspective and think things through more clearly.

What do you find helpful?

You Are Stronger Than You Think

When people are in deep emotional pain, the mind often convinces them that they are completely alone and that there is no way forward. Depression, heartbreak, anxiety, grief, loneliness, and hopelessness can feel so overwhelming that it becomes difficult to imagine surviving them. But so many people who once felt broken, lost, or defeated eventually made it through and discovered strength they did not know they had. Healing is rarely instant, and it is rarely easy, but difficult moments do not last forever. Sometimes all you need to do is hold on long enough to give life the chance to change.

If you’re struggling right now, what is one thing that has helped you keep going?

If you grew up chronically lonely, what’s one “sign” you recognize now?

Growing up, many of us weren’t taught about the importance of mental health, emotions, or feelings. When we experienced loneliness, it was easy to believe there was just something “wrong” with us. If you felt that way, you aren’t alone. 💚

If you grew up chronically lonely, what’s one “sign” you recognize now as an adult when you look back?

⭐Your answer may be used to update a Mighty article! ⭐

Mistakes are not proof that you are broken.

A lot of people carry old mistakes as if they are permanent definitions of who they are. But mistakes are one of the main ways we learn, grow, mature, and gain self-awareness. The goal is not to become someone who never fails. The goal is to become someone who can reflect, learn from difficult moments, forgive themselves, and continue moving forward with more wisdom. Healing often begins when you stop using your past as evidence against your future.

What is one mistake that ultimately taught you something valuable about yourself?

Finish this sentence: I find it hard to be alone with my thoughts when…

Being alone with your thoughts can be an overwhelming sensation at times — especially in those moments when distractions are at an all-time high, or processing them doesn’t feel super safe or accessible. Whether it be due to a health condition, external circumstances, or all of the above, having a way to get through those tough moments is important.

Mighty staffer @sparklywartanks finds it hardest to be alone with her thoughts when she’s having limiting beliefs and things around her don’t seem like they would change. Journaling is important to her because it allows her to explore the things she can do for herself that can help her find a sense of relief.

When do you find it hardest to be alone with your thoughts? What are some things you do or can do that would be helpful in processing those thoughts?
