Walking Alongside My Best Friend with ADHD #ADHD #Adhdinwomen #MentalHealth

Hey everyone, I'm Amanda Adkins, a mental health nurse specialist. I'm excited to share my story with you all.
Recently, my best friend opened up to me about her ADHD diagnosis. I was surprised, but also grateful she trusted me enough to share this part of her life. As we navigated this new reality together, I realized how much I had to learn.
Through our journey, I've discovered the importance of:
Education: Understanding ADHD symptoms, treatment options, and strategies for management
Empathy: Recognizing the challenges and frustrations that come with ADHD
Support: Being a reliable, non-judgmental sounding board for my friend
Preventing Overstimulation: Identifying triggers and creating a safe space for her to recharge
We've worked together to establish strategies for managing her symptoms, such as creating structure, breaking tasks into smaller steps, using reminders and visual aids, practicing mental health breaks, self-care and stress management, avoiding overwhelming environments and situations. By being mindful of her needs and limits, we've been able to prevent overstimulation and meltdowns. It's been an incredible experience watching my friend thrive as she learns to navigate her ADHD, and it’s been incredible to see her thrive! She's regained confidence, started pursuing her passions, and learned to love herself again, also with the help of her doctor. If you're living with ADHD or supporting a loved one, I'd love to connect and share our experiences!

Dealing with ADHD

For me, ADHD is all about short attention spans, energy management and actually remembering the plan.

Today, I wake up and chose to be better. As you can predict, my sentences won't be long.

I minimized the things in my living space, threw away all the " I can live without this " things and only kept absolutely necessary stuff around me.

It helps me give my attention to things that really need it. and i am hoping to apply the same to my thoughts, life style decisions and mindset.

After all, life is all about perspectives.

Have a good day

Don't give up :)

How do I get diagnosed?

For a while now I’m been thinking I had ADHD.
I had a psychiatrist- who just diagnosed me with BPD. But had referred me to the CPN (I’m in UK).
My question is, would it be the psychiatrist or a neurologist that would diagnosed ADHD?

What do I do now….?

Had a thorough few appointments with a neuropsychologist. FINALLY. After many, many years of turmoil and suffering searching for one; searching for someone to listen and take me seriously. I thought this was finally it.

WHAT do you do, though, when the doctor basically says to you that your SYMPTOMS are causing your symptoms???
Without even realizing it on their own that they’re saying something almost criminally absurd? And then leaves you with nothing. No answers.

I’m just sitting here crying and feeling like I can’t keep going on today… #Depression #Anxiety #ChronicPain #HEDS #EhlersDanlosSyndrome #Fibromyalgia #HashimotosThyroiditis #ThyroidCancer #ChronicMigraineSyndrome #chronicmigraine #BrainFog #SocialAnxiety #MigraineWithAura #DoctorVisit #DoctorShopping ?! #ADHD #AdultADHD #UndiagnosedADHD #ADHDInGirls #Adhdinwomen #Dyscalculia

It's executive dysfunction

It's executive dysfunction
That is my self destruction.
Tasks that others just simply do
Are impossible to get through
Wanting to is not the question

It's not a lack of instruction
Please do not make that assumption
Do not tell me to just "push through"
It's executive dysfunction

I know there are repercussions
No need for more discussion
How to change, oh I wish I knew
Because then I wouldn't be blue
Over having this malfunction
It's executive dysfunction

I am a mother with ADHD

I am a mother with ADHD
Overly permissive or too severe
I can never find what is in between
Routine I can never seem to adhere

Confusion is our normal way of life
The children never know what to expect
Why can I not be a more normal wife?
Maybe then everything could be perfect

But perfect is simply a fairy tale
This is something I easily forget
And yet I keep seeking this holy grail
This journey always causes me to sweat

I am trying to find a good middle
Finding it, though, is such a hard riddle

For those who love Buzzfeed 👏🏻

I have never felt so understood. I didn’t know I had adhd until a little over a year ago. I have bipolar disorder so when I told my psychiatrist that I had issues with focus and maintaining my life, he asked if I was ever on adderall when I was young. I had been but I’d have really bad anger fits when it wore off as well as weightloss. The only reason I had the anger fits is because of my being undiagnosed with bipolar disorder when I was in elementary school. Since I’ve been on a balanced medication regimen, I have been so much better at noticing when I’m about to have a burst of anger come out/when to take a step back and to regain my composure. I just thought I’d share this since I just came across it on my Instagram feed 💕 #ADHD #Adhdinwomen #Adderall #Anxiety #BipolarDisorder

In the 90s, no one thought girls could have "ADD" #ADHD #AdultADHD #Adhdinwomen #ADHDInGirls

Lately I've been researching ADHD, and I think that if the adults in my life had known that ADHD manifests differently in girls than in boys, I would have been diagnosed as a child. My cousin was diagnosed and took ritalin at a time when that was still pretty uncommon. I was labeled as "forgetful" and "messy" instead. Plus, I was a "gifted" kid who sailed through my academics, and people assume that means that a child is doing well in life in general.

I saw a meme recently that said that two things can be true at the same time: some of the choices my parents made had negative effects on me, and my parents loved me and did the best they could with what they had. So, I don't have any anger or bitterness about it. Right now, I'm doing my best to learn what I can do to make my life more manageable and less stressful. #ADHD #AdultADHD #ADHDInGirls #Adhdinwomen

Diagnosis...

Reading about the diagnostic process for ADHD makes me wary of pursuing a diagnosis, even though whatever is going on with me (whether it's ADHD or not) has legitimately obliterated my life. :-/
