I met with a psychologist in a professional capacity, not a personal one, and in passing she mentioned that she didn’t necessarily believe in the whole “personality disorder” label, that she had issue with this.
At first I was a bit annnoyed - she didn’t know me or my history or my diagnosis, how dare she invalidate something I’ve lived for years.
And then I thought a bit more about it.
Why are we disordered? Why aren’t these personality disorders thought of more as a spectrum, like gender now is? From those that are unfeeling to us who are extremely empathetic? We all love an empathetic friend, and we borderlines can all be empathetic friends. Why is it disordered to be hurt when your friend cancels, or to be scared of people leaving, or to have trust issues after being neglected or abandoned? Aren’t these just parts of us that make us who we are, like whether we like blue more than red, or prefer Mexican food over curry, or would rather be listened to fully than ignored?
